Mel's Review of Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

Blurb
As a wildcat Shifter and leader of his Shiftertown, Eric Warden knows his own kind. When he sees Iona Duncan, he realizes that although she appears human, she is a half-Shifter wildcat living without a Collar—and that if she doesn't acknowledge her true nature and her mating hunger, it may kill her…

Iona finds the mysterious and powerful Eric alluring, even though she has vowed never to reveal her Shifter side, lest her mother pay the price for hiding her all these years. But her mating hunger is rising, and with Eric so close, she may not be able to resist…and her desire may lead to the very doom they are fighting to deny…

This was an excellent shifter story. It was exciting and romantic with plenty of twists and turns. I really enjoyed both the main and secondary characters they were interesting and definitely make me want to pick up the previous books in this series to read their stories as well. That being said Mate Claimed is definitely written well enough to pick up without having read any of the other books in this series. It really has a little bit of everything so if you are a fan of shifters you should definitely give Mate Claimed a read. In my opinion absolutely recommended!

Mel's Review of Haunted by Willow Cross

Blurb
Have you ever heard something go bump in the night and wonder if someone was there? Only to go looking for the cause of the noise and find nothing at all. Or how about unexplainably feeling like you’re being watched when you’re completely alone? Things disappearing for no reason or strange ghostly footsteps in the hall? This book is a collage of short stories about a few of the otherworldly experiences I’ve had. Although they are not movie worthy, you may find them interesting. All the stories are %100 true. Nothing has been added for dramatic effect.

This was a really enjoyable book. I for one believe in ghosts and Willow did a wonderful job of retelling her experiences with the supernatural. Her stories even make me wonder if perhaps spirits are attracted to her BECAUSE she is so open and can see them. Whatever the case may be she is a genuine storyteller, and if you are a fan of real ghost stories and are looking for a quick read you should definitely check out Haunted.

Mel's Review of Harbour Falls by S.R. Grey

Blurb
Best-selling author Maddy Fitch, researching material for a new novel, returns to her hometown of Harbour Falls to investigate a disappearance that has haunted the tiny Maine coastal town for the past four years. Maddy soon discovers that the case has gone cold, but the prime suspect, Adam Ward, is hotter than ever. Now living on an isolated island, Maddy takes up residence near the sexy Mr. Ward's home. As she begins to seek out answers, the mystery deepens, putting Maddy in jeopardy.
Lies, secrets, deceptions. Nothing is ever what it seems in Harbour Falls.

A steamy novel that immerses the reader in an intricate storyline that will keep them glued till the very last page.

First in a series. Romance/Mystery genre.

Fantastic start to what promises to be an amazing series! Within a few chapters I was completely hooked and couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The story was fast paced and I absolutely loved all the different characters(especially Adam Ward) which ranged from sexy to down right crazy. Not to mention the town itself was so well put together I'd like to live there myself! This is the first book in a trilogy and I was happy that the main mystery was solved, but wow did she leave one heck of an ending to set up for the next book! And I honestly can not wait to see what happens next. So if you like steamy romance, intriguing mystery, and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat you should definitely check out Harbour Falls because you won't be disappointed. Absolutely recommended!

Next Big Thing Blog Hop 12/26/2012

1. What is the working title of your book?

At the moment, I am working on the second full length book the Moon Coven Series, Conversion.

2. Where did the idea for the book come from?

This particular series began as a dream, however I incorporated a little of my own Irish family heritage in the mix, and there you are.

3. What genre does your book fall under?

This series falls under the Young Adult/New Adult.

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I could totally see Leighton Meestor as Lilyann Moon and Alden Ehrenreich as her vampire, Mason Shaw.

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

This is a story about the adversities a family can overcome when they stick together, only with a supernatural twist.

6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

As of this moment, The Moon Coven Series is self-published.

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It usually takes me about two (2) weeks for the shorts, and 4 months to write the full length novels.

8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

I really can't compare this series to another, because of the unique quality of the story.

9. Who or What inspired you to write this book?

My parents at first. My mom passed away the day after my birthday in 2001 from Breast Cancer. That event was life shattering. I almost gave up on everything. My husband and were talking one night, and he said, "What would your mom think? The fact that you want to be a writer, but you're not doing it." That was all the prodding it took.

10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I enjoy the supernatural element of books. So, in my books... no one is exempt from being touched by the paranormal, and no one is guaranteed to make it to the end, not even my main characters.

My Review of Jessica by Laura Deluca

Blurb
Wilbur was used to going to his college formals alone. He thought the Halloween Ball would be no different. He’s amazed when a beautiful girl in a Victorian costume displays an interest in him and even more amazed to find himself alone with her on one of the campus nature trails.

What Wilbur doesn’t realize is that another woman has her eye on him too. The White Lady returns every Halloween to take revenge on the men of the campus for her brutal murder. She has chosen Wilbur as her next victim.

My Review

I have to be honest, when I picked this book up... I didn't expect much. It's a short story, and I just wanted something for a "quick" read. However, let me tell you... this book packs a punch! The writing is fluid, so much so that you (the reader) are able to get completely lost in the story, and for me... it scared the Bejesus out of me! Characters are well-developed, and the plot will have you thinking long after you put this book down. Personally, I slept with the lights on for a few nights :) Awesome job Laura!!

Author's Korner with Jaimie Hope

I'm so proud to have today's guest on Author's Korner. I met Jaimie Hope a little earlier in the year through my good friend, Jennifer Malone Wright. And, I have been absolutely wow'd by her ever since. She is an amazing person, and writer:) Read about how The Adventures of Baby Jaimie began, below!

The Birth Of A Series

When I wrote the first book of The Adventures of Baby Jaimie series I hoped it would turn into a series, but I had my doubts. After being rejected by several publishing companies I realized the world wasn’t as ready as I thought it would be to accept Children’s book series based on a disabled main character. This annoyed me somewhat, but I’d decided to move on and become a serious novelist. This was in 2006.
In January 2008 I had a reading at a local school. I’d done a few readings and signings of my first book sporadically since its November 2006 release, so I wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary, yet it was. I’d been sick for months prior to the event and wasn’t quite well at that point, but I pressed on.  As it turns out, I was glad I did.
After I finished reading the book I did a Q&A session with the kids. From the beginning they asked the typical questions I was used to and expected. They even asked me to do a wheelie in my wheelchair, which I do get asked to do quite often when I am around kids. As I said, I wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. Suddenly, I was asked when the next Baby Jaimie book was coming out. I hadn’t expected that and didn’t really know how to answer. I stumbled over the question quite a bit before blurting out, “The next Baby Jaimie adventure will be Baby Jaimie Goes To School.” That was how the series was born.

There are currently six books in The Adventures of Baby Jaimie series. The seventh book, The Adventures of Baby Jaimie: Baby Jaimie’s Dog Day is currently slated for release in February.

Author Biography
Jaimie Hope was born November 3, 1976, in New York. It wasn't until high school, where she joined the newspaper staff, that she decided she wanted to be a writer. After graduation, the author went to college and received an Associates degree in 1999. In 2002 she moved to Florida where she was an active volunteer in the local historical society and the Deltona Regional Library. In 2006 she moved back to New York where she released her first Children's book, The Adventures of Baby Jaimie. She followed it with two novels, Who Says You Can't Go Home?  She currently had two other novels, an autobiography to her writing credit. Baby Jaimie Goes To School is the sixth installment in the Baby Jaimie series.

Here are the covers of her amazing books!

Mel's Review of In My Dreams by Cameo Renae

It was happening again. The dreams. The nightmares. It was something that seventeen year-old Elizabeth Hayes thought she d outgrown; dreams that would come true; detailed premonitions of how people would die. This time she dreams about her boyfriend, Michael Young, and soon discovers that he has been found... dead.

He has not crossed over because he was murdered, and now the murderer is after Lizzy. His spirit won't rest until she is safe. As a newbie spirit, the easiest way for him to make contact is through Lizzy's dreams. When she dreams, it's as if he hasn't died.
Lizzy must learn to pull on her inner strength to survive horrifying events, and is faced with a most difficult decision. Would she risk her life to save her best friend and the very person responsible for Michael's death?
Meanwhile, Michael learns everything he can about his supernatural gifts to help. But will it be enough to save her?

Mel's Review

There are great books and then there are books like this that are so unbelievably amazing that they stand out even amongst the greats. A book so good that when you finally turn that last page you feel like it changed a little piece of you and will stay with you forever. It wrapped itself around my heart and for that I would like to thank you Cameo. I have not felt such strong emotion for a set of characters in a very long time...if ever. She truly has a real gift bringing her characters to life, and if In My Dreams is any indicator of whats to come in Cameo's books I certainly can not wait to read more! In my opinion if you like to read YA or even if you don't you ABSOLUTELY need to read this book.  Rating: 5 penguins

Mel's Review of Primal Possession by Katie Reus

As his pack's second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants-
until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended
mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam had gotten under her skin in a way she hadn't

thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is

attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going
to take her to places within herself she never knew existed.

I really enjoyed this book! It was as interesting as the main characters name. I am not usually a big fan of books told from many different characters points of view but Katie did it so seamlessly I didn't mind it at all.
Not only has she created strong appealing characters and backgrounds but she has also managed to create a fantastic world for them to reside in. My only complaint would be that the bad guys were handled a little too easily but that's not even a complaint so much as an observation. I happily got lost in this story and after the teaser she left for the next book in the series I can't wait to get lost in that one either. In my opinion, highly recommended!

My Review of Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

The first book in Richelle Mead's brand-new teen fiction series - set in the same world as Vampire Academy.

When alchemist Sydney is ordered into hiding to protect the life of Moroi princess Jill Dragomir, the last place she expects to be sent is a human private school in Palm Springs, California. But at their new school, the drama is only just beginning.

Populated with new faces as well as familiar ones, Bloodlines explores all the friendship, romance, battles and betrayals that made the #1 New York Times bestselling Vampire Academy series so addictive - this time in a part-vampire, part-human setting where the stakes are even higher and everyone's out for blood.

My Review

4 cups of expresso
Let me start off by saying that Richelle is absolutely one of my favorite authors, and Vampire Academy is my 2nd ALL-TIME favorite YA Paranormal series. Bloodlines is a great start to a series, but it wasn't as strong as Vampire Academy in my opinion. That's the reason that it received only 4 expressos. I like the beginning of a series to be VERY strong. I had to fight myself to stay in the book at the very beginning, but once I was in,.. I WAS IN!

The characters are very well-written, the scenes believable, and the story rolled!! She brought some of my favorite characters for the other series into this one as the "new" main characters. Not many writers could pull this off, and as seamlessly as she. Richelle Mead is by far one of the best writers of our day!!

Teal Haviland Author's Korner

I'm so excited to introduce you guys to this weeks' guest on K.B.'s Author's Korner! I met her on Facebook this past Summer, and I'll be meeting her in person at this years' UtopYA convention. She and I have become very good friends, and I absolutely adore her. Want to see why, me the queen of mean loves this chick? Well read her guest post below, and fall in love with my friend too! **BUT, be warned... I don't share well ;)

Hmmm . . . I am supposed to tell you a bit about me . . .
One of the most inspiring things for me when I write is music. Even when I’m not writing it helps to keep me grounded in that creative side of my mind. I have a deep affinity for music, and hope to put some of the lyrics I have written to music on day. So . . . what are some of my favorite artists to listen to when I write? Here is a sample from a very large and very diverse list of my faves:
Alexadre Desplat ~ His contributions to the Twilight Saga.

Florence + The Machine ~ Anything that woman does I listen to . . . she’s brilliant.

Lana Del Ray ~ Born to Die CD

Muse, Muse, and more Muse

Olafur Arnalds ~ It’s all brilliance . . . all of it.

Sarah McLachlan ~ Seriously . . . I can listen to everything she’s done a million times.

Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, and techno/industrial/dub-step songs that have a hard edge to them ~ For when I’m writing edgier scenes.

Mazzy Star ~ She’s great for moody scenes.

Ed Sheeran ~ Love him.

Howard Shore ~ The Lord of the Rings Trilogy scores.
The Civil Wars ~ Everything they’ve done, which unfortunately is not a lengthy list.

Basement Jaxx ~ Scars . . . this song is sooo the theme song for The Reaping Chronicles. It fits the mood well.

I have 676 songs on my writing playlist, so what you just read barely scratches the surface. If you ever want to know more of them, just ask here or message me on one of my Facebook links and I will be happy to share more!

My top three movies would be . . . ugh . . . that’s a hard one, but I think they would be The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Aliens, and the Bourne movies. I already want to continue to add to these because there are so many, and books are going to be just as bad if not worse.
Top three books in no particular order and I am already having anxiety because of only having three to pick from which is the reason for this run-on sentence and why I still haven’t gotten around to beginning that list for you because it is impossible to pick my top three I feel heart palpitations coming on and the room is growing darker as the edges of my world are starting to close in on me oh no I don—
Okay . . . darn it, sorry about that. I blacked out for a minute. Let me get these out of me before I begin to have another panic attack:
Graceling ~ by Kristen Cashore
Mists of Avalon ~ by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Lord of the Rings Trilogy ~ J. R. R. Tolkien
Favorite TV shows: The Walking Dead, Destination Truth, So You Think You Can Dance, Haven, Ghost Hunters and GHI, Once Upon A Time, American Horror Story/Asylum, Big Bang Theory.
Person I would most like to spend the day with? Well, that one’s easy . . . Johnny Depp. Why? Well . . .  so he would fall in love with me and then I could have his babies, of course! That, and I find him very interesting.
So . . . enough of me assuming what you want to know.
What would you like to know? Would you like to know who would be on my zombie apocalypse team if I could pick them, why I quit high school or why I’ve always felt like an outsider, who has been most influential in my life, which superhero I most identify with, what I think is the most important thing to remember as you walk your path in life, or would you like to know about the things I’ve seen since I was a little girl? Don’t be shy . . . ask away. :}

Author Biography
Teal Haviland lives in Tennessee with her daughter and her four-legged friends. She enjoys photography, travel, reading, music, cooking, daydreaming, writing (of course), and above all spending time with her family and friends.

Teal grew up with a love for anything fantastical or outrageous. After years of dreaming of worlds where fairies, angels, demons, and shape shifters (to name a few) exist, she finally decided to begin writing her stories down. Inception, book one in her series The Reaping Chronicles, is her first published novel.

The world is in danger. Mankind is sinking deeper into darkness it cannot understand.

Demons are easily capturing souls as they lead men and women down dangerous paths from which there is no return, while Javan, one of the Fallen, seeks an ancient book and the power it promises. If he succeeds, humans — and the world as they know it — will be destroyed.

There is someone who is capable of stopping Javan . . .

If she discovers him in time.

Gabrielle is one of the most powerful angels ever created, her job one of the most important. She has come to Earth to learn more about humans and what influences them, and to fight evil she sees growing at an alarming rate. She soon finds herself carelessly distracted with one human in particular, however. Lucas Watkins holds a promise of peace and love for Gabrielle that she never believed she could have again.

As feelings between her and Lucas become more than she can deny, so do the dangers mounting against him. After discovering who Lucas is, and the choice he faces, she realizes Darkness will come for him through demons and fantastical beings he thought only existed in his imaginings — forcing fairytales to become his reality.

Caught between her new mortal ties and ancient immortal responsibilities, Gabrielle must race against what seems to be an ever-quickening clock to learn what she needs to know, protect Lucas, uncover Javan’s plan, and find a way to stop him and all who live in Shadows.

Things become more complex than she ever anticipated, her decisions more critical, and what begins as a quest for information rapidly places her in an even more crucial position within the longest and most important war ever waged.

Join Gabrielle and her allies in a story of love – past and present – fantastical beings, hidden realms, magic, fate, loss, and the fight of good versus evil.

If you would like to read the interview my main character in The Reaping Chronicles, Gabrielle, did on me, or her incarnation scene, you can find them both in my Goodreads blog. The interview turned out really interesting. I am what’s called a pantser when I write. If you don’t know what that means, it simply means I write by the seat of my pants. The scenes I write aren’t planned out, so I am as much in the dark about where things are going as a reader reading the book would be. I love to write that way, it’s a kick. Anyway, because of that I didn’t know what to expect when I sat down to write the interview and I found out something by the end of it that completely took me by surprise. It reads more like a story than an interview, and you get insight into how I came up with Gabrielle, the Angel of Karma and The Reaping Chronicles.

The time she does have left, usually leading far into the night, is spent working on freelance work or her beloved fiction.

When she grew up, Jennifer always had her nose in a book. She has been writing stories and poems since grade school. This love of the written word and her strong interest in the paranormal is what has led to her first novel "The Birth of Jaiden," and her new series "The Vampire Hunter's Daughter."

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Jennifer is also a very proud military wife. Moving around the country for the last eleven years has made her a bit of a nomad and she finds it difficult to be in one place for too long.
